Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C)
01 Apr. 2017 - 31 Mar. 2021
The purpose of this study was to submit an outreach model for Hikikomori youths through a multiple faceted evaluation of this principal investigators' home visit practices executed mainly by clinical psychologists. Examining the processes to have the youths connected to supporting institutes, it was indicated that "place making support" rather than "employment support" should be considered as the first choice when they had "not going to school" experiences. Further more, interviewing with those youths showed that accompanying support to such institutes and limiting the number of home visits facilitated them to move forward. Finally, focus-group interviews with the clinical psychologists showed a favorable evaluation of the program along with further challenges of it. - Process of constructing identity from the narratives of young people in hikikomori(social withdrawal)

01 Apr. 2014 - 31 Mar. 2017
The purpose of this study was to delineate the phenomenon of hikikomori through investigating the process of identity formation based on the subjective experiences of hikikomori individuals depicted in their email and telephone counseling. It was revealed that the young adults between 10 and 19 years of age often discuss experiences at school regardless of gender, whereas the expression by individuals over 20 differed depending to their gender, and it was highly likely that the internal difficulty of “vague unease” and the external difficulty of “societal pressure” co-existed for those in their 30s. Especially, the male individuals aged 40 years and older continuously exhibited this tendency. Furthermore, three steps were identified during the process of their identity formation: “narratives about self as hikikomori,” “narratives about re-telling of self,” “narratives about relating to self.” - The strategy of mental health and developmental support focused on the utilizable support resource inside and outside school.

The aim of this study was twofold: first to develop an assessment accesses the utilizable support resource inside and outside school. Second to construct a community participation type systematic model effectively utilizing the resources. Considering the foundation of students’ mental health as a combination of their life inside and outside school, we developed a comprehensive assessment- Mental Health Scale. Using this scale, we assessed mental health of students from schools in Japan as well as abroad, and discussed the differences due to cultural context and areas. School based interventions were carried out based on the results and the effect were examined. The main strategy of the support system is that our existing consultation program is combined with a long-distanced psycho-educational support program. The outcome of the interventions were summarized in a parents-oriented leaflet that could help in the awareness-raising activities of students’ mental health.
