Journal of Teikyo Heisei University, Mar. 2018
Purpose:The authors investigated the ethical roles of nursing staff on palliative care wards who provide deep continuous sedation and maintain the quality of life of terminal-stage cancer patients. Methods:Fifteen nurses completed a questionnaire survey that included 15 multiple-choice items and an open-ended question on psychological-spiritual care for patients. The collected responses were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test for quantitative data and content analysis for qualitative data. Results:The analysis revealed that 70 % of nurses studied sedation prior to joining a palliative care ward. However, 30% of nurses indicated that they do not understand the definition of sedation and 50% of nurses indicated that do not understand levels of sedation. Overall, 80 % of nurses responded that informed consent is used to promote patient autonomy and that each patient’s decision-making should be clear in the patient’s mind. Responses to the open-ended question were grouped into the following categories: ‘Consideration of the dignity and quality of life of the patient’ and ‘Evaluating the quality and effects of deep continuous sedation’. Conclusion:The following ethical issues for nursing staff were identified: It is extremely important for nurses to understand medical science. Nurses must improve their consideration of the dignity and quality of life of patients and their families. - Current Status of the Fnhancement of Cooperation between Educational and Clinical Settings, and Related Issues and Measures: A Survey of University Faculty Members and Practicing Nurses

An open-ended question was categorized into 8 areas, namely, 【decline in basic ability of students for learning】, 【decline in communication competence】,and so on. Conclusion: The ability of students to achieve a bachelor’s degree is enhancing compliment. These findings revealed the necessity for ways of structuring curriculum and teaching method. - Outcomes and Problems of Interprofessional Education in Nursing and Social Welfare Students: A Study Based on the Students' Self-evaluations

Presently, “selective abortion” is carried out when “hereditary disease and difficulty” are found in a fetus through prenatal diagnosis and is considered legal by applying “the Economic Clauses into the Mother's Body Protection Law”. However this broad interpretation is lacking legal validity. There is also criticism saying that a “Provision for Fetus” should be established that admits abortion in cases of Fetal Abnormality.
First, we will determine what questions society will ask about the “Provision for Fetus ”, the establishment of which having been discussed since 1970. Next, we will confirm the importance of the viewpoints facing reproductive medical treatment technology which continues to improve along with genomic research. Lastly, we will over the “autonomy” of parents and appropriate ways of “selective abortion”, and make sure that ethical rules, such as support for the right of autonomy and value, are followed by nurses. - History of Hansen’s Disease and Problems on Nursing Education in Japan: Nursing Ethical Roles and Bioethics
YOSHIZAWA Chitose; SHIRATORI Takako
Journal of Japan Association for BIOETHICS, Jun. 2005, [Reviewed]
The history of Hansen’s disease in Japan has been mainly discussed from the viewpoint of medical policies and doctors. However, it still remains to be examined from the perspective of the nursing profession. Nursing professionals mostly devoted themselves to the care of people suffering Hansen’s disease through a sense of duty; nonetheless, they violated the patients’ human rights. This historic fact suggests strongly that we should establish an important bioethical obligation to protect the patient’s values and autonomy as a central component of our nursing ethical education. There is still some lack of understanding, both educational and practical, that the responsibility for the patient’s autonomy also rests upon our nursing professionals. In view of the previous Japanese attitudes towards Hansen’s disease patients, we must promptly expand systematic nursing ethical education. - On the Selective Nontreatment of Handicapped Newborns : Parental Decision Making on the Quality of Life and Nursing Ethical Roles.

Apr. 2015 - Mar. 2019
This study aimed to develop an ethical collaboration training program and investigate the issues of ethical collaboration among interdisciplinary medical teams. A 36-item questionnaire was distributed to 1,378 physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and social workers. The questionnaire measured ethical collaboration abilities and included an open-ended question on effective training activities. Data from 429 responses were analyzed. The analysis revealed statistically significant differences between physicians’ and nurses’ responses regarding their understanding of the law, the code of ethics, and general ethical principles. Free responses revealed that scenario training was considered effective. Physicians showed the greatest knowledge of ethical problems in interdisciplinary collaboration. These findings show the need for an ethical collaboration training program and methods of enhancing interdisciplinary ethical collaboration skills. - Development of nursing ethic educational program to improve ability for ethic practice of the clinical nurse
Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C)
Apr. 2012 - Mar. 2015
The purpose of this study was to develop a nursing ethics education program to comprehensively nurture the ethical practicing abilities of clinical nurses.
A questionnaire, given to 1335 nurses with 5 years or less clinical experience working in a technologically advanced hospital, investigated the nurses’ individual attributes, ethical knowledge, ethical perception, ethical reflection, ethical being and ethical doing. Of the 611 questionnaires collected, 500 were used for this study and put through the chi squared test, t-test, correlative analysis, and multiple regression analysis.
Results showed that it is important to improve the nurses’ ethical behavior through working on their ethical reflection, ethical being and ethical perception. In addition, it is also important to create a program where nurses could communicate with each other. Developing a good environment where the nurses can discuss their ethical self judgment is also important. - 学際統合型専門職連携教育開発プロジェクト
