  • Unconscious and Conscious Processing of Negative Emotions Examined Through Affective Priming

    Psychological Reports, Apr. 2013, [Reviewed]
This study investigated unconscious and conscious processes by which negative emotions arise. Participants (26 men, 47 women; M age = 20.3 yr.) evaluated target words that were primed with subliminally or supraliminally presented emotional pictures. Stimulus onset asynchrony was either 200 or 800 msec. With subliminal presentations, reaction times to negative targets were longer than reaction times to positive targets after negative primes for the 200-msec. stimulus onset asynchrony. Reaction times to positive targets after negative or positive primes were shorter when the stimulus onset asynchrony was 800 msec. For supraliminal presentations, reaction times were longer when evaluating targets that followed emotionally opposite primes. When emotional stimuli were consciously distinguished, the evoked emotional states might lead to emotional conflicts, although the qualitatively different effects might be caused when subliminally presented emotion evoking stimulus was appraised unconsciously; that possibility was discussed.

Research Themes

  • The efficacy of cognitive behavioral group therapy for Japanese students that have concerns regarding the regulation of their emotions

This study was designed to investigate the efficacy of STEPPS for Japanese students that have concerns regarding the regulation of their emotions. In Study 1, we developed the Japanese version of QuEST and examined its reliability and validity. In Study 2, we investigated the efficacy of STEPPS in sixteen students with difficulties in emotional regulation. BPD symptoms, especially thought and feelings, improved significantly after the intervention compared to the baseline. Moreover, the positive effects were maintained after the three-month follow-up. These results indicate that STEPPS is a feasible and effective program for students.
  • Psychological mechanisms of the processes resulting in negative emotional experiences

It has been shown that, negative emotion, which lead to appropriate coping behaviors, originate in the amygdala, without the person being aware of the negative stimuli (subcortical pathway). However, experiencing negative emotions is a requirement for perceiving and discriminating the stimuli (cortical pathway). Three studies were conducted, which indicated the following. First, when lesions are made for the treatment of epilepsy, it is difficult to observe the influence of negative stimuli on participants with right temporal lesions including the amygdala. Therefore, further studies on processing and experiencing emotions by participants with right temporal lesions that includes the amygdala are important. Second, it was showed that distinguishing the stimuli do not necessarily influence on negative emotional experience, but involve encoding information (formation of memory).
