The purpose of this study was to clarify the factors related to preparatory behaviors for death of older women who lost their husbands before old age and are now in old age.
Five older women who lost their husbands before old age were interviewed. Data were analyzed using Steps for Coding and Theorization (SCAT), which is a qualitative data analysis method using four-step coding.
Factors related to preparatory behaviors for death were generated in three categories, such as behaviors that help in adapting to life without a spouse, behaviors that aim at seeking to live better, and behaviors that prepare for the final stages of life. Behaviors that help in adapting to life without a spouse included time factors, living factors, financial factors, health factors, and family factors related to the opportunity and room to think about their death. In behaviors that aim at seeking to live better, it was the action factors with a view to enjoyment and death, such as goal factors, internal factors, acceptance factors for aging, and acceptance factors towards death. Behaviors that prepare for the final stages of life included recognition of preparatory behaviors, expectations for preparatory behaviors, actual preparatory behaviors, and the matter that revealed in preparatory behaviors. These were not behaviors of a particular order, but occur naturally as part of a spouseless life. - Effects of Simulation Exercises for Nursing Students Who Has not Experienced Clinical Training During COVID-19;: An ARCS-Model Evaluation

This study aimed to investigate the awareness of Bowel Dysfunction Care among care staff who participated in Bowel Dysfunction Care training and the actual state of Bowel Dysfunction Care. We conducted a questionnaire survey and collected data on the primary information on Bowel Dysfunction Care, the image of Bowel Dysfunction Care, and the Quality Indicators of Bowel Dysfunction Care. The sample included 17 participants (2 males and 15 females), with 9 participants (52.9%) having 10–19 years of experience, while 11 (64.7%) of them were nurses by profession. It was found that 15 participants had some worries or problems with Bowel Dysfunction Care (88.2%), 12 participants used the defecation checklist (70.6%), and 5 participants used the Bristol scale (29.4%). Although the trainees recognized Bowel Dysfunction Care as important and considered it rewarding, the average implementation rate of the Bowel Dysfunction Care Quality Indicators was 53.6% (SD=19.7). It was suggested that there is a need for educational support opportunities for acquiring knowledge and skills to improve the quality of Bowel Dysfunction Care. - Trends in Research on Dementia Nursing Care in Japan: Analysis of Article Titles Using Text Mining

The purpose of this study is to clarify characteristics of the grief process, and the adjustment to a new life of an elderly woman who encountered the unexpected death of her spouse at home. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and data were analyzed using Steps for Coding and Theorization (SCAT).
The elderly woman experienced difficulties in thinking and acting in an ordered way. The response of the police and the autopsy imaging procedure had confused and irked her, and she had not been given much time to bid her husband farewell before his body was removed. Features related to the unexpected death scene were “unforgettably shocking” for her, but more that, the personality and memories of her husband became “unforgettably important and precious.” This was one of the facilitative factors of grief work. Her current life was constructed as a mixture of “a life that can be continued without being aware of the absence of the spouse,” “a life of recognizing the absence of the spouse,” and “a life of acquiring a new object of love or a new role.” She adjusted to a new life, by rendering various matters and the local community, such as traditional customs of death and cooperation of locals, useful as the facilitative factors of grief work.
As the size and role of the local community had diminished, it became evident that it was necessary to focus on other facilitative factors of grief work. This included resilience, prior relationship with the spouse, family’s functioning, and role acquisition. - Issues in Spousal Bereavement Support for Elderly Men in Japan
YAMAUCHI Makiko; HIRAKAWA Miwako
Asian Journal of Human Services, 2020, [Reviewed]
This study aimed to review the literature related to elderly men after spousal bereavement in Japan, to clarify the characteristics of grief and trends in life, and to gain insights into the support system and future research issues. Of 13 studies found, two were qualitative and 11 quantitative. Eight studies were conducted on general elderly adults, with a few results focusing on the grief work itself of elderly men at home. Elderly men after spousal bereavement tended to be unable to continue “interacting with neighbors and relatives” as they did before the death of their wives. Together with the “human relations of friends and others made before the death of their wives,” the way of involvement in maintaining these was through a support perspective. In addition, the elderly men desired more support for their “current situation” than “bereavement-related situations,” and their view of support was characterized by the “examination of timing” and “selection of contents” of specific support for solving real-life problems. Elderly men who had provided nursing care before bereavement had a high feeling of emptiness owing to the loss of their career role. As such, the main issues were pre-bereavement support and continuous support after bereavement. No research had focused on the stressors of spousal death, dementia, strength of family and community, and evaluation of support; as such, these areas merit future research. - Construct of “Individuality” Perceived by Nursing Care Workers:A Qualitative Interview Study

The objective of this research is to clarify how nursing care staff perceive the user’s “individuality” based on their shared view in nursing care practices. The survey with paper questionnaire was conducted among 114 nursing care staff who worked at a care giving facility. As a result, 95 (83.3%) commented they had an experience of using the word, “individuality,” 22 (19.3%) commented they provided nursing care with “individuality” all the time, and 68 (59.6%) commented sometimes. In addition, we conducted the self-assessment and others-assessment personality test (BigFive short version) among 12 users who were engaged with all 9 nursing care staff in the same team, and then analyzed with Friedman test. As a result, it was clear that nursing care staff had different user perception on four factors, extroversion, openness, sincerity, and harmonicity, whereas they had a common perception on one factor, emotional unstableness. This indicates that it has high potential of providing consistent emotional care; however, it is also considered that they tend to provide care focusing on emotion. - 在宅認知症の人に対し男性の家族介護者が抱える葛藤と支援の方向性(第1報) 2事例の分析をとおして

The aim of this study is to get a suggestion for building a system of volunteering which supporters for dementia are as conversation partners and watch over for elderly people with dementia in an acute medical hospital.
Introduce of volunteering is connected with relief of symptoms, which showed that their faces seemed to be calm. Ward nursing staffs gave opinions that volunteering made them be awake during the day and prevented them from doing dangerous acts or leaving their ward and hospital. However, volunteering in unusual circumstance was beyond imagination what it made supporters nervous about agism and dementia,be afraid of symptoms of elderly people with dementia.
