  • Development of an integrated care model based on collaborative functional assessment for elderly cancer patients undergoing outpatient treatment

    The purpose of this study was to develop a collaborative comprehensive integrated care model to support elderly cancer patients undergoing outpatient treatment. We conducted interviews with 14 elderly late-stage cancer patients undergoing outpatient treatment, four physicians involved in cancer treatment, and four nurses with expertise in cancer care.
    As a result, we identified seven categories of perceptions regarding the treatment and symptoms of elderly cancer patients and seven categories of coping strategies.We also clarified nine categories of care provided by nurses ,and the content of medical care provided by physicians were identified.
  • Development and Evaluation of an Educational Program for Nurses about Care of Patients with Pleural Mesothelioma in Japan

    An evaluated an educational program for nurses about caring for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma in Japan was developed using instructional systems development and evaluated in the randomized controlled study design. The two-day program with a half-day follow-up program included lectures, group work, role-playing and group discussion. 188 nurses participated and 177 completed the study. Evaluation tools were originally developed. The Knowledge score was significantly higher at post-test (t=14.03, p=0.000) and follow-up test (t=8.98, p=0.000). Difficulty score was significantly lower at post-test (t=-3.41, p=0.001) and follow-up test (t=-3.70, p=0.000). The Attitude score was significantly higher at post-test (t=7.11, p=0.000) and follow-up test (t=4.54, p=0.000).
