Paper

  • Regarding the concept of physical education classes for students with motor maladaptation aiming at individual optimization and reasonable accommodation: Proposal of potential maladaptation factors
    shinto masaki
Teikyo Heisei University Bulletin, Mar. 2025, [Reviewed]
This study proposes the concept of "potential maladjustment" to physical education, a state where students are maladjusted without being aware of it, which goes beyond the subjective maladjustment of simply "disliking PE." Through an analysis of existing research on the dislike of PE, this study identifies the causes of this potential maladjustment as "teaching materials," "instruction," and "evaluation" that are ill-suited to the students' actual circumstances. From the perspective of the "individual optimization" and "reasonable accommodation" that these learners require, this study argues for the necessity of re-examining the future of physical education.
  • Instructional design for summary learning of a high school health unit based on the new curriculum guidelines: Implementing a "health map" as a rubric-based concept map
Research Report of the Japan Society for Educational Technology, 08 Dec. 2018
In July 2018, the new curriculum guidelines for upper secondary schools were announced. Regarding instructional improvement, there is a demand for advancements in teaching that are more conscious of the coherence of units of study, in order to realize proactive, interactive, and deep learning. This research puts into practice and examines the utilization of rubric assessment and the creation of concept maps based on instructional design.

Teikyo Heisei University Teaching Center 2024 (Reiwa 6) Annual Report, Mar. 2025
Lead, This report summarizes the achievements of the 2024 collaborative project between the Trainer & Sports Management Course and the Teacher Training Center. In the course's teacher training program, which celebrated its fifth year with all four grade levels present for the first time, all student teaching and nursing care experiences were completed successfully as planned. Furthermore, as a result of strengthening support for the teacher employment exam in collaboration with the Teacher Training Center, the program achieved the success of producing its first two successful candidates from the current student body.
  • Developing health lessons based on performance evaluation using rubrics
    shinto masaki
Tokyo Metropolitan Ogasawara High School Educational Practice Report No. 5 (Reprint of "Research Bulletin" Vol. 27), Mar. 2018
Lead, In the practice of high school health education, there are no practical reports on classes that use performance assessment and rubrics. Therefore, this study reports on a classroom practice that introduced performance assessment and rubrics to explore what abilities taught in high school health are actually needed in the real world, as well as methods for teaching and evaluating them.
  • Creating and implementing a rubric table to foster student understanding and trust
    shinto masaki
    Mar. 2016
Lead, This paper is a practical report on a study conducted at our school to address the inconsistencies in evaluation criteria that often arise from the frequent turnover of teaching staff. In this practice, we presented an "authentic assessment task" as a performance task. We then had the students themselves create a rubric for that task. Finally, we surveyed the instructors' satisfaction with these new evaluation criteria using a questionnaire.

  • Identifying Potential Maladjustments: Considering the Future of School Education
    shinto masaki
Nakano Junior High School District: 2nd Elementary and Junior High School Collaboration Education Conference, 18 Dec. 2024
In this presentation, I argued that "potential maladjustment" can exist even in high-achieving students in areas like physical education. Working from the premise that the definition of maladjustment evolves over time, I pointed out a specific state—often unnoticed by both the student and the teacher—where an individual "appears to be thriving from the outside, yet internally feels a sense of dissonance." I advocated for the necessity of identifying this misalignment through dialogue and providing support.
  • "The theory of the origin of exercise aversion" systematized from the modern theory of school maladjustment
    shinto masaki
The 40th Annual Meeting of the Japan Society of Sport Education (Held online), Dec. 2020
Based on the concept of "individual optimization," which adapts the educational environment to each student, this study re-examined Hatano's (1981) developmental model for the "dislike of exercise" from the perspective of contemporary educational challenges. As a result, the study proposes a new "Adaptation-Maladjustment Model" for physical education. To the five conventional factors, this new model adds a sixth, "Facilities and Materials," which involves re-evaluating the nature and use of equipment, thereby creating a new six-factor framework.
  • The gradual transformation of students' collective skills after using lower level exercises and materials in a network-based classroom
    shinto masaki
The 39th Annual Conference of the Japan Society of Sport Education (Waseda University), Sep. 2019
With the inclusion of a new perspective on learning collective skills in the ball games domain of the national Course of Study, I developed lessons focusing on the fundamental forms of ball games, utilizing component skills and modified teaching materials. This unit plan was implemented with first-year senior high school students in a net-type ball game, and their activities were video-recorded.

An assessment of their motor skills based on a rubric showed a transformation in their collective skills. Furthermore, descriptions from their learning cards indicated that even students who tend to struggle with physical activity responded positively to the lesson content.
  • Instructional design for the summary study of the "health" unit in high school based on the new curriculum guidelines: Practical application of the "health map" as a concept map based on a rubric
    shinto masaki; nagai taiki
    08 Dec. 2018
This study implemented a unit-summary learning activity to foster the perspective of "creating a social environment for health," as emphasized in Japan's new national Course of Study for health education. Based on instructional design, this practice involved students creating a concept map called a "Health Map," which applies the principles of Health Promotion. A corresponding rubric-based assessment was also introduced, with the aim of achieving active and deep learning.

Practical Exam Prep (Track and Field) for the Certified Health and Fitness Programmer Certification, I led the complete development and instruction for the practical exam prep course (Track and Field) for the "Certified Health and Fitness Programmer" certification. I independently designed an original, 6-session curriculum with a practical, step-by-step approach and provided extensive individual coaching outside of scheduled classes. This systematic support has resulted in a major achievement: a 100% pass rate every year since I took charge of the program.

Teacher Recruitment Examination Preparatory Course, As part of a student support initiative for passing the Teacher Recruitment Examination before graduation, I was responsible for the planning and management of a preparatory course exceeding 100 sessions per year. I established a comprehensive educational support system for students to incrementally develop their practical skills, covering everything from first-round exam preparation (written exams, essays) to the second round (interviews, mock lessons, scenario-based instruction, group discussions). Through this initiative, successful candidates passed the exam before graduation without fail every year during my tenure, a track record to which I directly contributed.

Material Development for the Certified Health and Fitness Programmer Certification, I was responsible for developing preparatory materials for the Track and Field practical exam of the "Certified Health and Fitness Programmer" certification. I created two main resources: a guide that systematically organized the evaluation criteria and key points to ensure students clearly understood the passing standards, and an original "Skills Checklist" to help them apply learned knowledge to practical situations. Through the development of these materials, I supported the students' process of objectively identifying their own challenges and efficiently improving their practical abilities.
