    Maternal health, Jan. 2014, [Reviewed]
This study aims to clarify the working conditions of full-time midwives who work at hospitals in Niigata Prefecture. We conducted a self-administered questionnaire survey with 43 nursing supervisors from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology or the Department of Gynecology at 43 hospitals in Niigata Prefecture to obtain general information about these institutions and the working conditions of midwives. The results show that 429 midwives work at 34 hospitals (response rate: 79.1%) and that there are 94 institutional potential midwives in total, including 62 at hospitals with a maternity ward and 32 at hospitals without one. Hospitals with a higher number of annual delivery cases employ a higher number of potential institutional midwives and are scheduled to employ new midwives. The major reasons for assigning midwives to non-obstetric departments were "to upgrade the knowledge and skills of midwives" and "midwives' own request to be assigned to other departments." In addition, the potential midwife in an institution was made into "the midwife who is not performing midwife functions among the workers which have midwife license" in this research.

  • A Study of Nursing Students' Subjective and Objective Fatigue on Classroom Lecture, Nursing Seminar, and Clinical Practice
    Sep. 2012, [Reviewed]
The purpose of this research is to clarify the level of fatigue in nursing students during classroom lecture, nursing seminar, and clinical practice from a physiological perspective. From 2010 through 2011 we conducted a survey of actual life situation and a questionnaire survey on a subjective symptom of fatigue on 59 second and third-year college nursing students. Also we measured vital signs, grasping power, and flicker fusion rate of these students as a physiological test. The survey of actual life situation showed that there was a difference on a period of time spent on hobbies, sleep, learning and computers between classroom lecture and nursing seminar. The analysis showed that grasping power which measures muscle function gradually declined on every form of learning from Monday through Friday. Its level was especially low during clinical practice. The average value of\nflicker fusion rate which measures mental and neurological function didn't change depending\nother day of the week, but there was no statistically significant difference on the form of learning\neither. Attention concentration such as distraction and lack of patience and nursing seminar\nshowed statistically significant difference on the association between a subjective symptom of\nfatigue and the form of learning. Also sleepiness and languor such as the languor of legs and\nclinical practice showed statistically significant difference on the association between a subjective\nsymptom of fatigue and the form of learning. These findings show that it is necessary to find a\nbetter way to prevent and cope with fatigue symptoms for enhancing educational effects on\nnursing students.
  • Effect of mental friend activities on mental friends themselves
Journal of Niigata Seiryo Academic Society, Sep. 2011, [Reviewed]
In mental friend activities at this university, students interested in child welfare provide support,\nas mental friends, to local children in hospitals, schools and welfare facilities. The aim of this\nstudy is to discover the effects of mental friend activities on the mental friends themselves. Six\nstudents who regularly carried out mental friend activities were interviewed. Analysis using the\ntext mining method showed that mental friend activities were linked to the mental friends' own\nlearning and personal growth.
  • Subjective experiences of mental friends in mental friend activities
Journal of Niigata Seiryo Academic Society, Sep. 2010, [Reviewed]
The present study aimed to elucidate the subjective experiences of mental friends (MFs) in MF activities conducted as part of the "Development of Community Welfare Through Mental Friend Activities", a Support Program for Contemporary Educational Needs (Contemporary GP project) initiated in 2007 at our university, in order to obtain information for establishing a support system for the continuation of MF activities. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted on five subjects who were registered as MFs at our university and regularly performed activities. As factors supporting MF activities, those focusing on the children at facilities, such as "provision of healing" and "expectations toward activities", were identified as motivations for registering as MFs prior to the start of activities, while factors related to self, such as "personal growth" and "personal healing", were observed following activities. Factors hindering MF activities included "difficulty in adjusting activity times" and "differences in recognition of children among facility staff", while expectations of MFs toward the university included "depiction of the children's lives at facilities" and "provision of opportunities for interaction among MFs". These findings suggest that measures promoting the continuation of MF activities are urgently required.

Bulletin of Niigata Seiryo University, 2008
[Purpose] In Japan, it was customary to bathe newborn babies in warm immediately following delivery. However this practice was reconsidered in 1974, at the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Presently, some institutions do not perform bathing while others continue the practice. Therefore, we conducted a survey in order to identify the sanitary measures currently carried out in the early neonatal stage and determine why they were adopted. The present study also seeks to clarify advice on bathing newborn babies. [Survey method] In May 2007, a survey questionnaire was sent to 59 institutions that handled deliveries in Niigata Prefecture and responses were received from 40 institutions. [Results] The sanitary measures used at birth and during the hospital stay were classified into categories A to E. The most common was category A(72.5%), dry-bathing immediately after birth and daily bathing from the following day. The reason for the sanitary measure taken immediately following birth was to maintain the body temperature of neonates in every category, while from the following day, the reasons differed according to the category, such as to avoid energy consumption, to maintain constant body temperature and condition , and to keep the neonates clean.

Bulletin of Niigata Seiryo University, 2008
Behaviors of adolescent children concerning sex have been remarked. It is said that theconversation at home is important as one of the ways for the resolution. Then, we carried outunsigned questionnaire at the seminar concerning sex for parents (attendee and his wife orhusband, total 346) that was held at one junior high school in A prefecture. The object of theanalysis is the 148 parents who answered validly. We investigate the object by dividing it into twogroups (conversation group and no-conversation group.)The result shows that conversation group (C-G)is 73(10 fathers and 63 mothers ,and no-conversation group(NC-G)is 73 (22 fathers and 51 mothers).57 of C-G(78 .1%)and 35 of NC-G(47.9%)have talked with children about body and mind. The percentage of C-G is significantly high. 47 of C-G(64.4%) and 48 of NC-G(65.8%)haveworried about children’ s body and mind.

Bulletin of Niigata Seiryo University, 2006
We incorporate the jigsaw method which is one of the cooperative learnings after partial study into instructive means of pediatric nursing skill. And we investigate the effect of education to confirm the condition of the acquirement and the attainment of the purpose of cooperative learning referring to the self estimation of 73students (2nd grade nursing course of A university). The rate of the answer that they could not learn the skills by jigsaw method is low, 14% taking medicine ,6% enema, 3% suction, 10% hypodermic injection. 90% of the students answered that they could learn the techniques by partial study, and 71% of them could learn from other members. So, we think the jigsaw method is adequate as the way to acquire the techniques. Jigsaw method is one of teaching-learning ways to learn the process composing safety and comfortable techniques by the cooperation between students and teachers using useful informations, and students answered that they could exchange their opinions between students(95%), between teachers and students(75%), however it needs more time than the former that is taken initiative by teachers、and the efficiency is not so good.

Bulletin of Niigata Seiryo University, 2006
We conduct questionnaire to know the evaluation of the peer counseling enterprise, the changes of the people attending the lecture and, the existence of the difference of the way of thinking about sex. The results of the survey are as follows. 1.The evaluation of the enterprise, there were insufficient contents of the lecture regarding Lecture of counseling-practice , Follow up seminar . 2.About the changes of the people attending the lecture, we recognize the difference concerning the consultation about contraception and the ways of thinking of execution before and after the lecture. 3.The comparison between the people attended the lecture and the people who didn t , we recognize the difference of the ways of thinking about sexual intercourse. And the percentage of the correct answer about sexual information of the people who attended the lecture was higher. For the above mentioned reasons, the efficiency and problems concerning training course were suggested.
