- The Relationship Between Community-Based Comprehensive Sports Club Utilization and Health-Related Indicators Among Older Adults: A Scoping Review.
Masashi SATO
Journal of Teikyo Heisei University, Mar. 2026, [Reviewed]
Comprehensive Community-Based Sports Clubs, recognized as emerging platforms for sports engagement, have been enhancing the quality of their services by implementing regionally tailored initiatives that reflect local needs and characteristics. While Comprehensive Community-Based Sports Clubs are expected to contribute to community health, empirical evidence regarding their sustained impact on older adults—particularly in terms of health promotion and long-term care prevention—remains insufficient. This study aims to address this gap by conducting a scoping review of existing literature to comprehensively examine the relationship between Comprehensive Community-Based Sports Clubs participation and physical, psychological, and social health outcomes among older adults. The second objective is to identify gaps in current research and clarify areas that require further investigation. A total of 22 studies published in Japan were reviewed. Sixteen studies (72.7%) employed physical health indicators, two studies (9.1%) used psychological health indicators, and five studies (22.7%) utilized social health indicators. Findings suggest that while Comprehensive Community-Based Sports Clubs hold promise for promoting health in aging populations, existing research has primarily focused on physical health outcomes, with limited attention to psychological and social dimensions. Given the multifaceted nature of health, future studies should adopt broader frameworks and utilize large-scale longitudinal data to assess the diverse impacts of Comprehensive Community-Based Sports Clubs participation. Moreover, efforts to visualize and quantify these effects are essential for informing policy and enhancing program effectiveness. As Japan continues to face demographic shifts toward an aging society, Comprehensive Community-Based Sports Clubs may play a critical role in fostering active aging and reducing the burden on healthcare systems. This review underscores the need for interdisciplinary approaches and comprehensive evaluations to fully realize the potential of Comprehensive Community-Based Sports Clubs in promoting holistic well-being among older adults. - Socioeconomic status and incident depressive symptoms among older adults: A 3‐year longitudinal study from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study

In view of the importance of university-based comprehensive community sports clubs, Teikyo Heisei University established the Teikyo Heisei Sports Academy (THS Academy) in 2013. The university operates it with the help of the local community. As one of its activities, the Physical Strength Visualization Project was mainly initiated by students and faculty members with the aim of improving awareness regarding health promotion by understanding the physical features of one's own body. It has been three years since physical fitness measurement meetings were launched for local residents.Initially, the meetings were open only to the THS Academy's senior program participants, but they are currently accessible to participants of all ages (junior, middle, and senior participants). In line with this expansion, initiatives were taken to reselect parameters and visualization of measurement results. - Physical fitness measurement society targeting local residents in an integrated community sports club at a university

From the perspective of community contribution, education, and research, we describe the use of an integrated community sports club site managed by our university. This club is a community contribution activity we are overseeing. We conducted the “IKI-IKI Tairyoku Mieruka project," in which the subjects regularly exercised and underwent physical function measurements. From an educational perspective, the students undergo assessments to practice what they have learned and to learn about behaviors from a social worker's point of view. In future, we will analyze the physical strength of local residents and conduct future research that can provide scientific evidence for physical activity programs. - Influence of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation to the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex on the mismatch negativity
