Bulletin of College of Nursing Ibaraki Christian University, 2010, [Reviewed]
This study aimed to clarify nurses’ perceptions of postoperative pain based on domestic literature published between 2000 and 2010. A literature search was conducted using “Ichushi Web” and “NDL-OPAC” with the keywords “postoperative pain and nurse” and “postoperative pain and nursing.” Nine papers met the inclusion criteria, all employing descriptive research designs. The research objectives included describing nurses’ experiences with postoperative pain management through patient-controlled analgesia, analgesic administration, and use of pain assessment tools, as well as their perceptions of pain and related nursing practices. Analysis of the extracted content identified six major themes: (1) downplaying postoperative pain, (2) diverse nurse perceptions of pain, (3) initiatives for pain management, (4) issues with assessment capabilities, (5) opportunities for education to improve assessment accuracy, and (6) interprofessional collaboration. These findings highlight the tendency among some nurses to underestimate patient pain, variability in perceptions and practices, and the need for enhanced assessment skills. Furthermore, the results underscore the importance of structured educational opportunities and collaboration across disciplines. Given the limited number of published studies, the accumulation of further research on nurses’ perceptions of postoperative pain in the perioperative process remains an important challenge for advancing evidence-based nursing care.
