Research Themes

  • Development of web-based support program for children in families with parental mental illness
    Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C)
    Tokyo Medical University
    Apr. 2014 - Mar. 2018
Having reviewed development of web-based support programs for children in families with parental mental illness,I found that the Children of Parents with a Mental Illness (COPMI)in Australia had been conducting the most pioneering web-based support programs. Notably, the e-learning program of the "Let's Talk About Children (LT)" had a good enough usability.
For developing the Japanese e-learning LT program, I conducted a pilot study for adapting the LT in Japan. Safety, feasibility, and acceptability of the Japanese LT were indicated in the research.
In addition, I conducted the national survey on the actual situation and needs of support by the mental health professionals, who support parents with mental illness and their children and/or families. From the results of the study, I found some possible contents for the future web-based support program for children in the families with parental mental illness in Japan.
  • Pathological internet use, neurodevelopmental disorders, and callous-unemotional traits in Japanese population
    Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C)
    Senshu University
    Apr. 2014 - Mar. 2018
Persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have a tendency to show pathological internet use because of his/her diagnostic characteristics. Pathological internet use was said to be related with callous-unemotional traits, which can directly predict antisocial behaviors; hence, I have explored a hypothetical model including, characteristics of ASD/ADHD, CU traits and pathological internet use.
  • Development of a Japanese version of a family-centered preventive intervention program for children in families with parental depression
    Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B)
    Apr. 2011 - Mar. 2015
With the aim of supporting children in families with parental mental illness, the present study created Japanese versions of two booklets (one for parents and one for children) originally developed by Dr. Tytti Solantaus, a Finnish child psychiatrist. Medical facilities and counseling services in the Kanto region were surveyed regarding the current state of support for such children and the application potential of the booklets. The findings clarified the current state of need and actual support in treatment and support settings, and all participants agreed that support for children in families with parental mental illness was necessary. A variety of potential applications for the booklets were identified, and about 80% of the participants responded that the booklets created for this study were necessary for both parents and children, suggesting that the use of such booklets would provide considerable benefit in terms of supporting children in families with parental mental illness.
  • Screening children/adolescents with Callous Unemotional Traits (CU traits) in Japanese general population and children/adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders
    Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Exploratory Research
    Senshu University
    Apr. 2011 - Mar. 2013
Callous Unemotional Traits (CU traits) have been adopted as one of the specified features under Conduct Disorder (CD) in DSM-5. CD is directly related to antisocial behaviors including delinquecy. If CU traits could be detected in early life stages, we could prevent children from antisocial behaviors including delinquency. I conducted national survey for screening CU traits among Japanese children and adolescents by using Japanese verion of Inventory of Callous Unemotional Traits (JICU). A total of 4088 students participated in this research. I found a certain level of reliability and validity of JICU. Setting 80 percentile scores of JICU as cut-off for CU traits, 795 students were condidered as having CU traits. I found there was no cultural differences between Japanese and Western children and adolescents, who present with CU traits. We could adopt Western evidence based practices to prevent Japanese children and adolscent with CU traits from antisocial behaviors in the future.
