To clarify the status of infection control measures implemented at massage, shiatsu, acupuncture, and moxibustion clinics during the COVID-19 pandemic, an online survey was conducted among licensed practitioners throughout Japan between July and September 2023. A total of 328 responses were analyzed. Most respondents relied on information provided by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and professional organizations, and widely implemented infection control measures such as ventilation, mask wearing, and hand hygiene. However, a small number of practitioners reported practices that were inconsistent with established guidelines, suggesting the need for continued dissemination and promotion of appropriate infection prevention measures. - The Influence of Different Hand Hygiene Operations on the Hygiene of Acupuncture Needles: Including a Comparison of the Influence of Acupuncturist's eyesight

Ten visually impaired acupuncturists and twelve sighted acupuncturists touched acupuncture needles under four conditions: before handwashing, after hand rub disinfection, after putting on nitrile gloves without surface disinfection, and after putting on nitrile gloves with surface disinfection. The needles touched by the subjects were placed on agar plates, and the appearance of bacterial colonies was observed. Bacterial colonies were detected on 11, 4, 2, and 0 needles out of 22, respectively, under the following conditions: before handwashing, after hand rub disinfection, after glove donning without surface disinfection, and after glove donning with alcohol disinfection. A difference in colony appearance was observed between bare hands before handwashing and after the three hand hygiene procedures. No difference in bacterial colony detection patterns was observed between visually impaired acupuncturists and sighted acupuncturists. Appropriate hand hygiene procedures during acupuncture treatment were considered to reduce bacterial contamination of acupuncture needles, regardless of the acupuncturist's visual impairment status. - Feasibility Study on the Application of Compact Ultrasound Imaging Devices in the Field of Acupuncture and Moxibustion

【Objective】Ultrasound imaging devices have recently been utilized in the musculoskeletal field, but issues such as large device size and high cost remain. This study investigated the potential application of a compact ultrasound imaging device, capable of imaging via USB connection to a computer, in the acupuncture and moxibustion field. 【Methods】Ten subjects participated: five university faculty members licensed as acupuncturists and five undergraduate students enrolled in acupuncture programs. Subjects attempted to image acupuncture needles (stainless steel needles, diameter 0.30 mm, length 60 mm) inserted into the shoulder joint and thigh region under conditions of approximately 10° angle and 20 mm depth within 10 minutes. Imaging was performed using a compact ultrasound imaging device (fST9600, LEKIO Power Technology Co., Ltd., hereinafter referred to as the compact device) and a conventional ultrasound imaging device (F-37, Hitachi, Ltd., hereinafter referred to as the conventional device). Imaging of the acupuncture needles was performed using both devices. We compared (1) measured values obtained using the measurement function of the ultrasound imaging device (hereinafter referred to as measured values) and (2) estimated values calculated by measuring the non-inserted portion with a ruler and subtracting this length from the total needle length (60mm) used in the experiment (hereinafter referred to as estimated values). Subjects were also asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their experience using the devices. 【Results】In comparing measured values and estimated values, a difference was observed for the thigh region using the compact device (P=0.045), but no difference was observed for the shoulder joint region. Furthermore, no difference was observed between measured values and estimated values for either the shoulder joint or thigh regions using the conventional device. Regarding usability, the compact device showed a tendency to be easier to carry than the conventional device (P=0.01). No difference in operability was observed between the two devices. [Discussion and Conclusion] The compact device demonstrated imaging capability equivalent to the conventional device for objects of approximately 0.3 mm in size. Furthermore, the compact device was suggested to be easier to handle. - Influence of Using Gloves and Finger Stalls During Operations of Acupuncture Needles. The aim of this study is to evaluate by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) whether using gloves and finger
stalls can prevent foreign bodies adhering to the acupuncture needle from the fingers of the acupuncturist. After
attaching sodium bicarbonate to their fingers, the acupuncturist touched the acupuncture needles under three
conditions: bare hands, using powdered latex finger stalls and using powder-free nitrile gloves.
The acupuncture needles were observed by an SEM. Additionally, the elemental components of the foreign bodies
on the surface of the needle were analyzed with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. After touching the
acupuncture needle with bare hands, we observed that there was adhesion of foreign bodies containing elements of
sodium to the surface of the acupuncture needle. After touching the acupuncture needle using powdered latex finger
stalls, we observed that there was adhesion of foreign bodies containing elements of silicon and magnesium to the
surface of the acupuncture needle. After touching the acupuncture needle using powder-free nitrile gloves, we did not
observe that there was any adhesion of foreign bodies to the surface of the acupuncture needle. In conclusion, using
powder-free gloves prevents foreign bodies from adhering to the acupuncture needles from the fingers of the
acupuncturist - Survey on Hepatitis B Prevention Measures at Acupuncture and Moxibustion Training Schools in Japan

【Purpose】This study aims to investigate awareness and actual practices regarding hepatitis B vaccination and viral hepatitis-related testing (hereinafter referred to as hepatitis testing) at educational institutions training acupuncturists, moxibustion practitioners, and massage therapists (hereinafter referred to as acupuncture training schools). 【Methods】Questionnaires were sent to 160 acupuncture and moxibustion training schools nationwide in Japan, requesting responses regarding the actual status of Hepatitis B vaccination and hepatitis testing among faculty and students at each school. Results: Questionnaires were returned from 124 of the 160 schools (response rate: 77.5%). Among acupuncture and moxibustion training schools, 75/124 schools (60.5%) mandated or recommended hepatitis B vaccination for faculty, and 72/124 schools (58.1%) did so for students. Regarding hepatitis B vaccination costs, among schools that responded: - For faculty: 37/78 schools (47.4%) covered the full cost. - For students: 46/71 schools (64.8%) required students to cover the full cost themselves. This was the most common response. Regarding future policies on hepatitis B vaccination, 63/124 schools (50.8%) for faculty and 72/124 schools (58.1%) for students stated they would recommend it but not mandate it. Schools not conducting hepatitis screening were 57/124 schools (46.0%) for faculty and 58/124 schools (46.8%) for students. Among schools conducting hepatitis testing, 55/67 schools (82.1%) covered the full cost for faculty, and 35/64 schools (54.7%) covered the full cost for students. Furthermore, only 41/124 schools (33.1%) provided sufficient explanation of the necessity of hepatitis B vaccination to students across multiple subjects. [Conclusion] Awareness regarding hepatitis B vaccination and hepatitis testing among both faculty and students at acupuncture and moxibustion training schools was low. This study suggests a need for initiatives to promote hepatitis B countermeasures within these training schools. - 中高齢女性における運動器の疼痛および身体機能は日常の身体活動量に関連する

腰および膝に疼痛を有する中高齢者の身体活動量(PA)維持に有効な対策に関する知見を得るため、腰痛および膝痛の両症状を有する自立した生活が可能な中高齢女性を対象として、疼痛症状および身体機能レベルとPAとの関連を検討した。地域在住の60歳代および70歳代の女性で、腰痛および膝痛改善の運動教室に参加を希望した28例を対象者とした。PAは、加速度計を用いて歩数および歩行によるエネルギー消費量を評価した。疼痛レベルは質問紙による腰痛(RDQ)および膝痛(WOMAC)を、腰下肢の身体機能は体力テストにより評価した。重回帰分析で、歩数および歩行によるエネルギー消費量には、膝伸展筋力およびRDQ得点が有意に関連することが示された。腰痛および膝痛を有する中高齢女性のPAを維持する上で、特に膝伸展筋力維持と腰痛ケアを行うことが重要である可能性が示唆された。 - 鍼施術が筋骨格系に痛みを訴える中高齢者の身体活動量に及ぼす影響

筋骨格系の疼痛症状の改善を目的に鍼施術を受療した中高齢者55例を対象として、鍼施術の受療を契機とした、症状、行動および気分の変化と、身体活動量の関係を検討し、鍼施術が身体活動量増加に与える影響を明らかにした。鍼施術、身体活動量および健康関連QOLに関する調査を行った。鍼施術受療を契機とした症状、行動および気分の変化として調査した7項目おいて、鍼施術が症状、行動および気分に対し、良い影響を与えることが示唆された。運動の頻度、外出・旅行の頻度、気分の変化および症状に対しての対処の見通しで、鍼施術受療を契機として望ましい変化を認めた群は、変化無しもしくは望ましくない変化を認めた群よりも、歩行による身体活動量は有意に高値を示した。筋骨格系に症状を有する中高齢者で、鍼施術受療が身体活動量増大の契機となる可能性が示唆された。 - 日本医学柔整鍼灸専門学校におけるOSCE実施に関する検討

[Objective] In this study, the pain of receiving acupuncture was evaluated with or without individual finger stalls.
[Design] In a randomized, subject- and operating person-blind, controlled study.
[Methods] Sixteen acupuncturists and same number of normal volunteers participated in this study. Two needles were inserted into each side of the lumbar muscles. The trials were carried out twice using finger stalls and with bare fingers. These trials were performed in random order. Right after the insertion of needles and at the beginning of electrical stimulation, the subjects were asked to answer a questionnaire about the severity and quality of pain on receiving acupuncture. Durations of procedures were measured. We asked the acupuncturists whether they felt any difficulty in performing acupuncture using finger stalls.
[Result] The majority of acupuncturists reported that using the finger stalls during treatment was inconvenient. Although the severity of pain of acupuncture did not significantly differ between that with and that without finger stalls, the average value was slightly higher with finger stalls. The qualities of pain on receiving acupuncture did not significantly differ between the two methods, however, the numbers of selected words differed on some items. The subjects could not recognize the use of individual finger stalls. The use of finger stalls did not influence the duration of the procedure.
[Conclusion] In this study, the qualities of pain on receiving acupuncture did not significantly differ between that with and that without finger stalls. The subjects could not recognize the use of individual finger stalls. - 脳血管障害患者におけるLipoprotein(a)測定とその意義

This study aimed to establish a viable and effective hand hygiene operation for acupuncturists to prevent infection accidents associated with acupuncture treatment, regardless of acupuncturists’ eyesight. We confirmed that hand washing with standard running water and using soap and scrubbing to disinfect reduced the amount of bacteria adhering to acupuncture needles. It was also found that wearing medical gloves (hereinafter called gloves) could inhibit the adhesion of bacteria and foreign substances to acupuncture needles from acupuncturist' fingers and the adhesion of blood and other patient body fluids to acupuncturists' fingers at the time of needle removal. Furthermore, the timing and methods of hand hygiene in the clinical room were also examined, and it was confirmed that scrubbing to disinfect and putting on gloves immediately before acupuncture are hygienically effective and feasible even for acupuncturists with visual impairment.
