Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate whether trigger point acupuncture (TrPA) is beneficial for office workers who have reduced job performance (presenteeism) due to chronic neck and shoulder pain (katakori).
Methods: A 4-week single-center randomized controlled trial was conducted on 20 eligible female office workers with chronic neck and shoulder pain of at least 3-month duration. The control group implemented only workplace-recommended presenteeism measures, whereas the intervention group received TrPA up to 4 times per month in addition to the presenteeism measures recommended by each workplace. The major outcome measure was the relative presenteeism score on the World Health Organization Health and Work Performance (WHO-HPQ). The secondary outcome measures were pain intensity (numerical rating scale), absolute presenteeism (WHO-HPQ), anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale; HADS), catastrophic thoughts related to pain (Pain Catastrophizing Scale; PCS), and sleep (Athens Insomnia Scale; AIS).
Results: All 9 cases in the intervention group and 11 cases in the control group were analyzed. TrPA up to 4 times per month reduced the intensity of neck and shoulder pain by 20% (P < .01, d = 1.65) and improved labor productivity (relative presenteeism value) by 0.25 (P < .01, d = 1.33) compared with the control group over 1 month. No significant differences were observed between the 2 groups in terms of absolute presenteeism score, HADS, PCS, or AIS.
Conclusions:These results suggest that regular intervention with TrPA may be effective in the relative presenteeism score before and after the intervention and the degree of neck and shoulder pain over 28 days compared with the control group. - Health status of university football athletes through multidimensional screening

Injury prevention and health promotion among elite athletes are crucial to athletic success. Risk management requires the understanding and adjustment of physical, environmental, and psychological factors. Sleep status can be one of the essential factors for maintaining good health and preventing injury. The Athlete Sleep Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ) is expected to be an international standard for evaluating the sleep status of elite athletes. The 16 items ASSQ assess several sleep-related factors, including sleep difficulty, sleep-disordered breathing such as snoring and apnea, sleep and psychosomatic functioning during expeditions, chronotype, napping, caffeine intake, and electronic device use.
A total of 158 male college soccer players responded the ASSQ-J and the Japanese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-J). A factor analysis was conducted to validate the factor structure of the ASSQ-J. The internal consistency of ASSQ-J is assessed for validation. Pearson’s correlation coefficients and kappa statistic were calculated to determine if the ASSQ-J was significantly associated with PSQI-J respectively.
Regarding the ASSQ-J-SDS, 22.4% (35 of 156) of the subjects in this study scored 8 or higher (moderate or higher), which was almost consistent with the results of a previous study on college athletes. It is clear that some Japanese male collegiate soccer players have sleep problems, as same as collegiate athletes around the world. Further research is needed for the validation of the ASSQ-J, the sleep status in a wider range of ages and sports are also investigated. - Effect of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation on daytime sleepiness, depression, and study engagement in college students: a randomized controlled trial

INTRODUCTION: Fibromyalgia is a chronic illness that causes symptoms such as pain. In Japan, although pregabalin and duloxetine are the drugs of choice for fibromyalgia, they may be ineffective or may cause side-effects. Studies have reported on the efficacy of acupuncture against fibromyalgia. However, acupuncture is not always effective in clinical practice, and the reason for this is thought to be the dysfunction of the descending pain control system. This study aimed to determine whether the combined use of electro-scalp acupuncture and conventional electroacupuncture reduces fibromyalgia symptoms and drug dosage requirements. METHODS: Patients with intractable fibromyalgia (visual analog scale [VAS] score ≥50 mm; Japanese version of the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire [JFIQ] score ≥50) receiving pregabalin were recruited in this single-arm nonrandomized uncontrolled study. They underwent electroacupuncture on four limbs plus electro-scalp acupuncture once a week for 5 weeks. Drug intake, pain (as determined using VAS), quality of life (QOL; as determined using JFIQ), anxiety, depression, catastrophic thoughts, and sleep were assessed. RESULTS: Although there was no increase in drug intake, 42.8% (3/7) of patients reduced pregabalin intake by approximately 10% (a moderate though insignificant effect). Pain levels significantly declined (VAS 75.4 ± 11.7 mm to 64.3 ± 17.3 mm; P = 0.05) and QOL significantly improved (JFIQ 67.0 ± 13.4 to 50.9 ± 18.3; P = 0.02). The parameters for anxiety, depression, catastrophic thoughts, and sleep did not significantly change. CONCLUSION: The combination of conventional electroacupuncture plus electro-scalp acupuncture may effectively alleviate pain, improve QOL, and reduce pregabalin dosage requirements in patients with fibromyalgia. - Managing office worker presenteeism by providing financial aid for acupuncture therapy: a pragmatic multicenter randomized comparative study.

The functional movement screen (FMS) is an evaluating system which is used during conditioning for injury prevention. A previous study reported improvements in FMS after collective exercise. The purpose of the current study was therefore to examine the relationship between collective exercise and changes in the FMS. A collective exercise program (CEP) was prescribed according to each subject’s FMS results. The subjects were instructed to perform CEP daily, and the FMS was measured after a 13-week intervention period. The results of this study suggest that the implementation of CEP for at least 4 days a week has some beneficial physical effects, including the acquisition of functional movements. - トリガーポイント鍼治療の動向:2019年における文献調査.

Many people routinely have a routine in which they exercise once a week. They should be performed along with the purpose of the training. Stability training is often carried out for enhancement of performance in the field of sports. An appropriate load is important for athletic rehabilitation. Rehabilitation without gradual advancement characteristics can lead to various repercussions such as prolongation of period of return to play and recurrence injuries. It is therefore advisable to objectively assess the load exerted by each training method. However, the degree of alteration of muscle activity on change of the height and instability of feet on performing side bridges was unclear. Seventeen healthy male participants performed four kinds of side bridges (on the stable floor, stable 30cm stand, unstable floor, unstable 30cm stand). Muscle activity was measured and inspected at the time of the enforcement. Activity of the gluteus medius, external oblique muscle, internal oblique muscle and the multifidus lumborum muscle were measured with the help of a surface electromyogram. The gluteus medius significantly showed low activity on the stable 30cm stand in com-parison with the other conditions. The external oblique muscle, internal oblique muscle, and the multifidus lumborum muscle significantly showed significantly high activity underon the unstable condition. It was thought that by raising the feet on the platform, the activity of the gluteus medius muscle decreased. Besides, it was suggested that the activity of the trunk muscles mayight be markedly required highly needed underon the unstable condition. - ffects of Acupuncture Sensations on Transient Heart Rate Reduction and Autonomic Nervous System Function During Acupuncture Stimulation. [Objective]Acupuncture has been reported to be useful for temporomandibular disorders. There have been many reports on muscle problems in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) but only a few reports on disc problems. We report on the use of acupuncture in a temporomandibular disorder patient with disc disorders.
[Case]A 19-year-old female complained of pain upon opening her mouth and trismus. We applied acupuncture with the aim of resolving the disc problems and providing analgesia by a contributing muscle needling approach.
[Methods]The following were measured:intensity of jaw pain, anxiety and satisfaction (visual analogue scale:VAS), position and form of disc and caput mandibulae (MRI) and presence of jaw deviation.
[Results]The following were improved after acupuncture treatments:intensity of jaw pain, anxiety and satisfaction, limitation of jaw movement and jaw deviation. However, the positions of the discs did not change.
[Conclusion]These results suggest that acupuncture may be effective for temporomandibular disorder patients with disc disorders., The Japan Society of Acupuncture and Moxibustion
