How do middle-aged women women in contemporary Japan understand the concept of femininity? Young women (n=118) and their middle-aged mothers (n=118) participated in a study, in which the Femininity Consciousness Scale (FCS) was developed and used to identify four factors: "Personal Magnetism," "Traditional Image," "Appearance and Looks," and "Negative Image." Results indicated that middle-aged women did not attach as much importance to Appearance and Looks as did young women. Moreover, the self-evaluation of middle-aged women was below the average. The Attitudes toward 'Femininity' Scale (AFS) was also developed and two factors, "Affirmative Attitude" and "Negative Attitude" were identified. Results indicated that Affirmative Attitudes were not high and Negative Attitudes were low in which group of women. Results of correlation analysis between the FCS and AFS indicated that there was a positive correlation between there was a positive correlation between Affirmative Attitude, Personal Magnetism and Traditional Image of young women, and that Affirmative Attitude and Negative Attitude were positively correlated with Negative image in middle-aged women. These findings suggest that the relationship between attitudes and consciousness about femininity in contemporary Japan is different in different generations of women.

女性性に関する研究の動向と展望についてー生涯生涯発達的視点の必要性

This article reviews previous research on femininity in the field of psychology and in the learning of a proximal domain mainly focusing on research trends in Japan. In psychological research, differences are found corresponding to sex/gender roles deriving from biological differences. This research has lead to a change from the view that masculinity and femininity are two poles of the same dimension to the view that they are different dimensions. When the characteristics of femininity were examined, the item of appearance was included in a measure that was developed in Japan. Appearance is a more important facet of femininity even than motherhood. However, in recent years, research on femininity has declined in psychological research; on the other hand, in educational sociology or pedagogy, the new viewpoint considers "femininity as a means." Finally, in future research, we need to examine the viewpoint of life-span development and the femininity of the middle aged - a topic that has not attracted attention until now.

Women's experience of the midlife crisis and the influence of stressors and social support on the process of the crisis was investigated. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 middleaged women (aged 40-59). From the verbal analysis of interview material, a hypothetical model based on the grounded theory approach was generated and tested. The results indicated the following. (1) Declining physical appearance and the consciousness of being an Obasan were special feature of the midlife crisis of women. (2) Five patterns were found in the process of a woman's midlife crisis. Moreover, the following four points were suggested: (i.) A healthy mind and body and a sense of fulfillment in life reduces the development of the crisis. (ii.) Stressors mostly influence the cause and the recognition of the crisis. (iii.) Social support influences the relief from stress. (iv.) Developing an inner stability of the self is required for resolving the crisis and stopping its repetition.

The features on the midlife crisis of women and the relationships between the midlife crisis of women and special stressors related to women in this period, as well as the availability of social support were investigated. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 215 middle-aged women (aged 40-59). The results indicated the following. (1) A middle-aged women caught the midlife crisis and the stressors low overall, and it was felt that comparatively a lot of social supports had been received. (2) In the midlife crisis of women, there were no significant differences related to age, but there were significant differences related to the lifestyle. (3) Diverse effects of stressors and social support on the midlife crisis of women were illustrated by using a cause and effect model of stressors and social support on this crisis. The results emphasized the particular importance of marital relationships.
