  • A Case in Which an Employee on Leave Due to Depression Contributed to the Start-up of a New Business after Returning to Work—Support Focused on Career Review with Leave of Absences a Turning Point—

The Japanese Journal of Career Counseling, 31 Mar. 2025, [Reviewed]
In recent years, workers’ career autonomy has become a social requirement, and many studies have shown
the effectiveness of career support. However, career-based environmental adjustment is not a prerequisite for
returning to work for workers on leave due to mental health problems. In addition, the components of the return-to-work support program(re-work program)indicated by the Depression Rework Association do not include the development of career support. This study introduces a case in which career support was provided to a person on leave participating in a re-work program, and examines the effectiveness of providing career support with in the framework of the rework program. The client in this case took stock of his past work style and skills through the transition of his leave of absence, and by concretizing the tasks suitable for him, he was able to launch a new business that met the needs of the company and the workers after returning to work. This case study shows the effectiveness of career support in rework programs.

  • Process of Psychological Assistance Provided by Career Counselors at Re- employment Support Companies
    Baba Hirosuke; Nitta Yasuo
Japanese Association of Industrial Counselling, 2020, [Reviewed]
The purpose of this study is to generate a hypothesis of the process of psychological assistance provided to unemployed persons by career counselors working at re-employment support companies. Semi-structured interviews targeting 11 career counselors with five or more years of re-employment support experience assumed to be able to provide a certain level of psychological assistance were conducted at the re-employment support companies with which the researchers are affiliated. The obtained data were analyzed using a modified grounded theory approach (M-GTA). Based on the results, 26 concepts, 6 categories, and 3 core categories were generated. The findings suggest that the support process is a gradual one that consists of the following stages toward the realization of re-employment for unemployed individuals experiencing anxiety: 1) receiving assistance by accepting negative emotions while preparing to take the first step into the job market, 2) providing consistent support to enable individuals to accept that difficulties may recur and to promote activities at a stage when the repeated experience of failure has led to the loss of confidence, and 3) providing support in seeking re-employment until employment is obtained.
